Keeping email logs for a year part 2

by: WanderingTechy Sunday, January 25th, 2009

Ok, we are only two months away now from having to keep all email logs for a year. Having thought about this some more it going to not only prove to be expensive for ISP’s it is going to slow down investigations, and inevitably prove totally pointless.

Pointless?

If I were a terrorist would I use a UK ISP knowing that all the mail logs were being kept? If I were stupid then possibly, but then again I would likely do other stupid things that would have me caught before hand. But lets just think what other options do I have to communicate anonymously.

  • There is the old wheeze of having a hotmail account and not actually sending the emails just saving them in drafts. All my buddies have access to the same hotmail account and just read or post to the drafts folder. This totally circumvents the maillogs.
  • Or I could use a modern version of the above wheeze and just use a free blog on wordpress.com using the same Save Draft method.
  • Or I could just setup a simple mail server on my own laptop thus avoiding the ISP’s mailserver and its logging.
  • Or I could purchase hosting in another country and use webmail installed on it.
  • Or I could encrypt the message and post these to a public news group below an apparantely innocent posting.
  • Or….

I think you get the message it would not be hard to communicate still whilst avoiding this legislation. All this legislation will do is push the terrorist to use another method of communication
