Windows 7 First Impressions

by: WanderingTechy Tuesday, October 27th, 2009

I have just installed Windows 7, and being an MS hater I was expecting the usual install problems.  You know the ones,  Install Windows, Reboot,  2nd Stage install,  find driver disks, install one driver reboot, install another driver reboot…  Oops driver doesn’t work, reboot  search the internet.  Can’t search the internet as network driver didn’t install.

Well,  2 reboots and 16 minutes later everything up and running including 3G and drivers for BlackBerry.  Erm…  Shellshocked to say the least.

I have just finished installing my USB TV dongle driver and letting windows media center do its stuff and again Wow.  It just worked.

My initial impression after playing with it for 2 hours is.

No huge differences between XP and this.  The task bar and start menu work a bit differently and it’s a little frustrating as it doesn’t work as I am used to but this will pass.

I like the fact that the quick start has been merged with the task bar but it will take me some getting used to.

They appear to have put a huge amount of work into built in drivers and it now works more like linux in that it installs without asking for multiple manufacturers driver disks.

It appears to be faster but I will have to judge this after 6 months as XP is fast just after install but rapidly bogs down after a couple of months.

I love the built in TV software it is much more stable and usable than the free Pinacle crap that shipped with the card.

Conclusion

Nothing ground breaking,  but much easier to install,  better integration and faster (initially)  I will report further as I put the system through its paces.
