Going OpenSource on Windows 7

by: WanderingTechy Wednesday, March 10th, 2010

I have now made the final push to go opensource on all my windows 7 applications.  Although I would say the overall project has been a success there are one or two areas of failure.

Here is a list of tasks and software I use to complete them.

  • Web Browsing – FireFox
  • Email – ThunderBird
  • Office – OpenOffice
  • FTP – FileZilla
  • DVD Backup – HandBrake
  • Development Work – Eclipse PDT
  • HTML Editor – Kompozer
  • Graphics Editor – Gimp
  • PDF Viewer – Sumatra PDF
  • WAMP Stack – Zend Server CE
  • Notes – Wiki on a Stick (Woas)
  • Blog – WordPress (both local and internet)
  • Archive Manager – 7Zip
  • Xmind – Idea Mapping Software

Failures

Where I don’t use Open Source

  • iTunes – I buy a lot of my TV shows from iTunes.
  • AnyDVD – It removes copy protection from DVD’s to allow me to back them up to my Media Center
  • RegExpBuddy – I have not found an open source regular expression program as good as this.
  • And of Course Windows 7.

As soon as I can use iTunes and can backup my DVD’s under Linux I will be moving across.  I will probably move to a dual boot system once I have done the bulk of my DVD’s.  RegExpBuddy works under wine on linux so that is not an issue.
